Potty Training: Helping Your Child Get Ready for School
Starting school is a big milestone for children and families. Learning to use the toilet independently is an important part of becoming ready for school, and many children are still developing these skills in the months before they start Reception.
The NHS Best Start in Life toilet training campaign provides practical advice and support for parents and carers of children aged 3–4.
There is still time to help your child build their confidence and independence with using the toilet.
5 practical steps to potty training
- Tell your child what’s happening – talk to them about using the potty or toilet and explain what to expect.
- Stop using nappies during the day – when your child is ready, help them become familiar with being without a nappy.
- Help your child use the potty or toilet regularly – encourage them to sit on the toilet at regular times and recognise when they need to go.
- Praise their efforts – celebrate their progress and reassure them when accidents happen.
- Build their confidence – encourage your child to practise new skills such as managing their clothing, wiping, flushing and washing their hands.
Every child develops at their own pace, so try to keep toilet training positive and encouraging.

💉 2026 One-Off MenB Vaccination Programme
Are you eligible for the new one-off MenB vaccination?
A time-limited MenB vaccination programme is now available for eligible young people who are starting university or residential further education for the first time in autumn 2026.
You may be eligible if you:
- Are aged 17 or 18 and were born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008, and are registered with a GP surgery in England.
- Are under 25 and starting university for the first time in autumn 2026.
- Are under 25 and starting further education for the first time in autumn 2026 and will be living in further education accommodation.
The programme requires 2 doses, given at least 4 weeks apart, so eligible patients are encouraged to arrange their vaccination as soon as possible.
🛡️ Protect yourself against MenB
MenB bacteria can cause serious illnesses including meningitis and septicaemia. Students living in shared accommodation can have a higher risk of meningococcal disease.
